IA: 05 Reflection on a Guest Speaker
My favorite guest speaker throughout the
semester was Rebecca Harris. Rebecca works at Chatham University in the Center
for Women’s Entrepreneurship, and is the Executive Director of the program. The link to her LinkedIn page is here: https://www.linkedin.com/in/rebecca-harris-03a81114/. When she came and visited our class, she
discussed how to start a business, and the attributes needed to be successful
while doing so.
Her lecture about the process of starting a
business, relates back to Chapter 5 in our book. It discusses entrepreneurship and
the different sectors one can go into when starting a business. Focusing on the
core values to help better your business. Rebecca added her insight from all of
her previous jobs, which was very helpful.
In addition, this lecture reminded me of some
current business news, talking about new and upcoming businesses in the
Pittsburgh area. Stating to see if the business will be likely to succeed or fail
within the first year. For businesses to succeed, they have to be dedicated to
their product or service and be willing to spend many hours doing so. Without
this, your business will fail. Which is the topic I have recently seen all over
the news.
I am
able to relate tis lecture back to an article in The Harvard Business Review titled
“What Kind of Leadership Works Best at Your Company.” This article talks about how
companies such as Amazon and Tesla suggest a new version of leadership. These company’s
goals are to have high-performing organizational skills that coincide with
their leadership skills. Hence, making it easier to succeed from all the time
and effort put in. All in all, making specific changes to better them as a
whole.
